Synopsis

Setting

Scavenger Hunt Canceled takes place in a bastardized version of The Sword Coast. Everyone within a 5 mile radius of the party is gay or bi, but other than that, it's a heteronormative world. Racism exists, but only because Abby accidentally spoke it into existence.
 

Plot

The story initially followed 6 adventurers named Taxes Evasion, Maximilien Robespierre, Papaya Clethtinntheallordrianfenkenkimbatuul, Zakria of Avernus, Morag, and Haru. Though Papaya and Robespierre already knew each other, the rest of them met in a tavern. The party began a small-scale adventure when a wild sheep claiming to be a famous wizard pleaded for their help in escaping a group of thugs. The party failed, and immediately parted ways, though Papaya and Robespierre stayed together.During Papaya and Robespierre's year traveling together, Papaya was attempting to get her feet off the ground as a bard. Unbeknownst to her, however, Robespierre had been sucking her blood every evening, which made her lethargic and prone to making mistakes. Papaya's career did not take off during this year, primarily because of Robespierre.

Campaign Name Origin and Meaning

The name Scavenger Hunt Canceled is both the name of the campaign itself, and the adventuring party.The name Scavenger Hunt Canceled originates from the Adventurer's Festival Arc, in which the party participated in a scavenger hunt. During the event, the party had to come up with a team name for themself, which would be broadcast to the entire arena using a Thaumaturgy spell. The party came up with the idea to name themselves "Scavenger Hunt Canceled" to potentially fool their opponents into thinking the scavenger hunt had been canceled. The name for the party being "Scavenger Hunt Canceled" stuck long after the Adventurer's Festival arc, and despite the rest of the campaign having nothing to do with scavenger hunts or them being canceled, it remains the party and campaign's name.

Aslan Lazarus

Background

It was the Year of the Volanth: 655 DR. The nation of Dambrath was plagued with violence, but despite it all, Aslan Lazarus lived an ordinary life. Growing up in a small town far outside the jurisdiction of nearby cities, Aslan trained under his father to become a lumberjack. He never truly excelled at it, but Aslan was born into a pocket of peace in a war-torn world. When Aslan was young, he would climb up the craggy cliffs of the Bay of Dancing Dolphins, looking out over the ocean stretching out for miles beneath him. It made him feel like he could conquer the world.

And conquer he did.In 688 DR, a visitor came to Aslan's town. The visitor was elegant and well-dressed, and seemed of noble status. He spoke of cities that towered over the trees, magic that could bend reality, and the world beyond the bay. Aslan was charmed. Over the next 3 years, the visitor returned often. Eventually, the visitor invited Aslan to his mansion, a week's travel away. Smitten, Aslan left his hometown for the first and last time.The evening of their arrival, under the light of a cold moon, Aslan was killed by the visitor.800 years passed, and Aslan was resurrected by an incredibly powerful spell. He awoke in an entirely new world. To him, only a week had passed since he had left with the visitor. He could still remember his sister's face, the sound of his father's laugh. But the life he knew was gone. And apparently, he had become a monster. During those 800 years, Aslan had become a True Vampire answering to name of Lazarus, siring hundreds of his own loyal vampire spawn and murdering thousands. Two notable vampire spawns of his are Maximilien Robespierre and Reva Espinoza. Lazarus had been killed by Maive di Medici, famous adventurer and one of the original founders of the Order of the Sword. Even after Lazarus's death, such was his influence that many of his spawn remained loyal to him. This included Reva, who was so obsessed with Lazarus that they did everything in their power to bring him back, later resulting in their own demise.Resurrected as he is now, as just an elven man, Aslan remembers none of his life as Lazarus. All he remembers is his life in Dambrath; everyone and everything he'd loved, and everyone and everything he'd lost.

Attila Linestone

Background

Attila Linestone was born in Nevernear, a chaotic demi-plane of the Feywild. There, his life was made a living nightmare by his father. Perle wanted his descendants to be the best of the best, and his older son Bleda was not nearly as talented as young Attila. Perle forced them to duel each other, and at four years old, Attila killed Bleda.Excerpt from Session 103:

 
"Attila’s gaze shifts to Perle, who just watches him, expectant. As his brother struggles to rise, Attila lifts his dagger, plunging the blade deep between his brother’s ribs. Bleda crumples to his knees as blood pools around him, thick and dark. Attila raises his blade again, tears welling up, but his hand trembles so violently that the blade slips, clattering to the ground. Disappointment flashes across Perle’s face. He strides forward, grabbing Attila by his arm and dragging him roughly backward, away from his dying brother. Attila struggles violently, and his scream pierces the air."
 

Soon after, Attila's mother took Attila and ran from Nevernear, escaping to the Prime Material Plane. They eventually arrived in Candlekeep, where they settled down. Attila was a prodigy, in part due to their innate sorcery, which was rare. There, they met Atlas Whitlock and Sheldon Thalier, who were their close friends throughout their schooling in Candlekeep Academy.However, Attila was too smart for their own good. They were moved up four years, away from Atlas and Sheldon. This resulted in them beginning graduate school at Silverymoon Conclave at the age of 19.Attila left Silverymoon Conclave at 22 to return to Candlekeep and take Orpheus's place as Acting Guardian. According to The Rat King, Attila did not graduate; rather they dropped out in their last semester.Attila and Sheldon usually keep contact through long letters. Recently, Attila has been visiting Sheldon in his dreams using a higher level version of the Dream spell. Upcasted as an 8th level spell, Attila is able to contact creatures that don't sleep, such as elves. This enables them to contact Sheldon.

Taxabelle "Taxes" Inkham Debenture Evasion

Personality

Taxes has always been naive and optimistic. Ever since she was a child, she desired to become a great warrior and thought little about the implications of what that might actually entail.While traveling with the party, despite having just experienced a huge betrayal at the hands of Farla Yrbis, Taxes still trusted her friends without question, never once doubting their goodness. Despite being a Barbarian in class, her “Rage” was always more of a determination to protect her friends in battle, and rarely actual anger. She was completely and utterly oblivious to each of their darker sides, remaining hopelessly ignorant up until the events of the Trial (Session 73), which completely shattered her image of Robespierre.Following the Trial, Taxes became noticeably more downtrodden, but it wasn’t until Session 94, when the party found out that Robespierre was the Moondevil, that she went from being sad to being genuinely angry a lot of the time. Her Rage was now actual fury driving her to be fiercer and stronger. And it was in Session 99 (Truth or Dare) when all of her remaining optimism finally came crashing down.Since then, Taxes has started behaving in a much darker way. She has had angry outbursts, been open about her distrust of people, and even been actively manipulative at times. Despite this, her view of the world at large and her morals have remained Lawful Good for the time being, still believing that she has a duty to do the right thing even if she distrusts the motives of those around her to do the same.
 
 

Background

Taxes Evasion was born and raised in Sundabar, a city to the east of Silverymoon. She grew up in a upper middle class family, with her father working as a criminal defense lawyer and her mother working as an accountant in bankruptcy. As a young girl, Taxes idolized the Order of the Sword, a prestigious adventuring guild founded by Maive di Medici. She especially loved Arun, the half-orc bard from the original adventuring party that founded the Order.Taxes wanted to become a great warrior like her idols, and so she set out to become a gladiator. Her parents supported her, but were worried for her health, since of course, gladiating is not a profession that is known for safety. Taxes left home at 18, pursuing a life of gladiating.At first, things were going amazing. She was metaphorically killing it in all of her practice duels. After a few years, she met Farla Yrbis, a dragonborn fighter. Farla and Taxes hit it off, working together as training partners. But their friendship was not to last. When pitted against each other in a life-or-death final duel in Baldur's Gate, the two were evenly matched. Taxes bested Farla, and was about to strike the killing blow, when Farla pleaded with her for her life. Being soft-hearted, Taxes paused, smiled, and leaned down to help Farla up. In her moment of distraction, Farla kicked Taxes' legs out from underneath her, sweeping her to the floor. Then, she beat the ever loving shit out of her with her spiked club, until Taxes was pronounced dead. This is where Taxes got most of her facial scars.But Taxes wasn't dead. Even as she was being dragged out onto the pile of bodies from other matches, she clung on to life. She woke up in a house of healing a few weeks later, to the nurses' elation. Taxes was permanently brain damaged from the vicious beating, and lost her ability to read and write. She began to pursue lower-stakes gladiator fights, but continually lost due to her injuries. Eventually, she met Maximilien Robespierre, Papaya Clethtinntheallordrianfenkenkimbatuul, and Zakria at a tavern in Elversult, and joined their party to make some coin so that she could pay for the entry fee in her next tournament. However, she never went to her next tournament, instead choosing to stick around with her new family.

Angus McDonald

Background

Not much is known about Angus' backstory before he joined the party. He recollects his early childhood in a series of vague remembrances, all of which are almost comically sad.In one, he mentions a red haired man who took Angus's glasses and broke them. Angus saved up money to purchase new glasses, and when he did, the red haired man broke them again. Being an overly trusting young boy, Angus dismissed the red haired man's malevolence as mere mistake.Angus' earliest memory is walking barefoot on warm cobblestone. This is a memory he looks back on fondly, considering it a nice part of his life. The rest of the party, namely Sheldon and Hoagie, see this story as being one about an infant toddling around a massive city without shoes and without a home.In another memory, Angus recalls living in the sewers in squalor, and being pushed into the sewage by other children. He reflects on these moments with optimism.Angus' motivation to become the World's Greatest Detective is to eventually find his parents, whom he is convinced miss him and want him back in their family.Angus and Hoagie are adoptive brothers, though not through any official channels. Angus claims he is the older one, a notion that Hoagie is happy to entertain.

Adarr Shadowing

Background

Adarr A'Xilreth was born in Menzoberranzan, where he didn't have a particularly good life. (Insert tragic backstory here basically). He escaped on his 20th birthday, changing his last name to Shadowing upon his arrival to the surface. He was so fucking edgy... He eventually found companionship in a small aarakocra named Iri. But their peaceful days together were not to last. Iri's mother, a vengeful night hag necromancer named Agatha, wanted Iri back, so she pulled strings to make a cursed lute fall into Adarr's possession. Over the years, Adarr was slowly changed by the lute, and his morality wavered until he lost it completely. Iri was on the receiving end of his abuse, and eventually, Iri stabbed Adarr to death in retaliation.But Agatha wasn't done with Adarr, not yet. She raised him as an Undead Lich, erased his memories, and forced him to work for her. Adarr began a tenuous relationship with Iri and Iri's adventuring party, that fell apart when he regained the memory of Iri killing him. Terrified, Adarr ran away.Adarr found new friendship in Yvonne, a talented and famous musician. Together, they started a band called REVIVE, a six-person band. It's fantasy k-pop. Adarr has recently started seeing a man named Windsor, a charming half-elven detective/artificer who specializes in the invention of musical gadgets. At the end of Session 100, Adarr confessed to Windsor that he is a lich, which Windsor seemed to accept.REVIVE grew bigger than Adarr ever expected, and soon, Iri caught wind of Adarr's existence. Iri inherited his mother's vengeful nature, and he intends to end Adarr for good.

Inzuri Adelhart

Personality

Adelhart never seems to lose his cool, unless it's specifically an act. Despite his sexual endeavors, Adelhart is quite an upstanding and accomplished citizen, though his motives for being upstanding are likely not entirely pure. Adelhart relishes in the suffering of intelligent monsters. Due to society's general hatred towards monsters, this morally questionable obsession is overlooked, and Adelhart is often hailed as a hero.Adelhart is easily bored, especially by weak people. He has attacked Maximilien Robespierre twice: the first time in the plains above Proskur, and the second time at the Maschero Masquerade. Adelhart was convinced that something was off about the alleged vampire spawn. Adelhart felt as though Robespierre was pulling back his true powers, and wanted to test this theory by forcing Robespierre to attack him back. However, each and every time, including at the trial, Robespierre refused to attack him, disappointing him at every turn.
 

Background

Adelhart was born and raised in Waterdeep, where his parents, both famous painters, taught him the art.At one point in his life, Adelhart rose in the ranks at the Order of the Sword, but his method of doing so is largely unknown. He personally knows Maive di Medici, the founder and grandmaster of the guild, and refers to him as a friend.Adelhart was roped into participating as a prosecutor in The Trial by Attila Linestone, who was apparently phoning in a favor that he was owed. While Adelhart's demeanor at the trial was casual, the amount of evidence he presented was staggering.Recently, Adelhart has taken interest in Scavenger Hunt Canceled, and volunteered to be the party's mentor at the Order of the Sword.

Atlas Whitlock

Background

Atlas spent his childhood in Silverymoon before moving to Candlekeep alone as a child to pursue schooling there.During his years at Candlekeep, Atlas became close with fellow students Attila Linestone and Sheldon Thalier. However, he and Sheldon drifted apart from Attila when Attila was moved up grades above them. Thus, Atlas and Sheldon grew closer. After they took Candlekeep's Final Examination (a test given to all 16th years to both allow them graduate and to slot students into different graduate schools), Atlas was accepted into the most prestigious graduate school, The Conclave of Silverymoon. Unbeknownst to Atlas, Sheldon was not admitted. He had apparently failed the Final Examination, so much so that he didn't graduate from Candlekeep Academy at all.Instead of telling Atlas that he wasn't admitted, Sheldon lied to Atlas, telling him that he was accepted. The two of them entered a romantic relationship, and for that brief moment in time, everything felt perfect.On the morning of their graduation, Sheldon ran away from the Academy to the Pillars of Pedagogy in Candlekeep Proper, leaving Atlas to graduate and travel to the conclave alone. Later, Sheldon sent Atlas a letter explaining the situation, which Atlas did not receive very kindly.However, Atlas still tried to make the best of his education. His new roommate at the conclave was a human woman named Ellor Tillwood, who was also studying cartography. The two of them began to date, until Ellor was one day murdered by The Moondevil (Reva Espinoza) while sleeping in her bed.Since then, Atlas has been more temperamental and moody, and refuses to talk in depth about his emotions.

Mithre Thekas-McDonald

Background

Mithre was born and raised in Waterdeep as a part of the Thekas Estate. His early life was a typical noble's life, though being a younger son, his parents felt less intensely about his life.When Mithre met Hoagie on March 7, 1489, the two had a secret relationship, where Mithre taught Hoagie noble customs, and Hoagie taught Mithre about thievery and an urchin's life. Mithre found this life incredibly exciting, and longed to leave the estate and explore the world.When Mithre told his parents about Hoagie, much to his surprise, they were fairly quick to accept Hoagie. Despite his lack of noble heritage, and the two were engaged.But Hoagie did not give up his thievery entirely, even after being lavished with the wonders of nobility. Hoagie brought Mithre along on a heist with a small gang called The Bulldogs on September 14, 1490. Unbeknownst to Hoagie, the Bulldog's actual target was not the merchant caravan group that they'd been planning to steal from, but actually Mithre, due to his noble heritage. When the Bulldogs turned on Hoagie and Mithre, Hoagie ran, leaving Mithre behind to his fate.Mithre survived, and eventually, was forced into an arranged marriage with Jhassim Hillgauntlet III. Their engagement party was on Ibrido island, but of course, the party did not go as planned.

Onyx Festan

Personality

To most people, Onyx is uncaring, borderline evil, and quite rude. He does not care at all what other people think of his lifestyle, and he doesn't care about the law. He doesn't think he's above most people, but he also doesn't think he's beneath anybody, either. That is, except Zakria.With Zakria, Onyx is far more submissive, following her commands without complaint. However, he has been shown to push back a little bit if he doesn't want to do something -- for instance, if pressed on certain elements of his past, Onyx will speak vaguely, and attempt to move the conversation forward, or back onto Zakria.Onyx has been known to partake in the consumption of any and all meat, including rotten meat, human meat, or both at the same time. He lives his life as close to a feral cat as possible, so he doesn't make a distinction between ethically sourced meat and more questionable meat.
 

Background

At one point in his life, Onyx's family died. He does not seem upset about this. He also eventually found his way to Fistandia's Mansion, where he masqueraded as a housecat for an unknown number of years.Onyx first met Robespierre in Fistandia's Mansion as a housecat. Robespierre fed him some meat, and Onyx (through Speak with Animals) asked Robespierre to marry him. Robespierre agreed, and the two were engaged, with Robespierre having no idea that Onyx was actually a humanoid.Later, Robespierre and Onyx were separated from the party and attacked by Adelhart, who downed Onyx, but did not kill him. Robespierre and Onyx made their way to Proskur after the attack, where Robespierre killed Thrynn Drake, the owner The Beastiary. He then stole a potion that would turn Onyx into a humanoid for a week.After the party reconvened and entered the Shadowfell, Onyx found out that Robespierre had been cheating on him with Sheldon Thalier, which caused such an outburst that Onyx threatened to leave the party. Zakria wanted to keep him around due to his strength, and so she offered him some fish. Onyx then pivoted, becoming suddenly and intensely loyal to Zakria. He asked her to marry him, but she declined. When pressed, Zakria said that they could "take it slow and get to know each other first," a request that Onyx has been surprisingly respectful of. When Onyx called her "darling", Zakria requested to be called "master", and she has been his master ever since.Onyx forgot to transform back into a cat after the potion wore off, and thus it was revealed that Onyx had been a druid this entire time.

Tartanus Fartanus

Background

Tartanus has spent his entire life searching for bananas. He proclaims that it's his one goal in life. Tartanus has lived well past the maximum age that satyrs usually live, and the party attributes this to his desperate need to find a banana before he dies.At one point, Tartanus joined the Order of the Sword so he could access more research on bananas. He climbed the ranks absurdly quickly due to his power. He claims to have accidentally killed a kraken once.

Veridan O'Laris

Background

Veridan grew up ultra-rich, in one of the most lavish mansions in all of Waterdeep. He also grew up ultra-smart. These things combined made him a very entitled adult, prone to throwing tantrums when he doesn't get his way.Currently, his scholarly ambition is to combine two radically different schools of magic (Evocation and Necromancy) using shadowglass, a rare substance capable of storing immense magical power. However, shadowglass is prone to catastrophic failure if not precisely controlled, and so his mentor, Sterling, refuses to approve the project.

Vittorio de Luca (Vito)

Background

At one point in his childhood, the entire conclave of Rihanna that he grew up in was massacred and burned to the ground by worshippers of Asmodeus.He and Nytina Fenfall traveled together and eventually met Edwin Buonarroti, who, as a more experienced adventurer, took both of them under his wing. The three of them adventured together for a number of years, growing very close, before Vito and Nytina decided to try out for the Candlekeep Adventurers' Guild, and Edwin decided to settle down in Baldur's Gate.Despite the years they traveled together, Edwin never pried too deeply into Vito's past. It just seemed too painful, even if Vito seemed cheerful.

Farla Yrbis

Background

At one point, Farla became a gladiator. She met Taxes Evasion, who was an up-and-coming gladiator. The two of them trained together for some time before, in a twist of fate, they were set up against each other in a final duel to the death. Then, she beat the ever loving shit out of her with her spiked club, until Taxes was pronounced dead. Farla was crowned victor as Taxes' bleeding body was dragged out of the arena.Recently, Farla has entered her Retirement Fight, a fight that typically signifies the end of a gladiator's career. This end usually means a glorious death for the gladiator. Her final fight is taking place at The Sunderdome Tournament, where prison convicts are given a chance to fight for their freedom. Prisoners are often sourced from maximum security prisons like The Hollow.

Background

Not much is known about Agatha's life before Iri. At one point, she arrived in the village of Kierr and took interest in infant Iri. She sought to procure a child, but since hags are incapable of child-rearing in a typical sense, she did what any hag would do: steal the baby, and eat it. Afterwards, she vomited him up and pieced him back together. In the process, she injured Iri's wing permanently.She then promptly returned Iri back to the village, where she supervised him from a distance for a number of years, occasionally stealing items from him and his family, and drawing him while watching him from the edge of the forest.A few years later, Agatha burned down Kierr and "rescued" Iri in a bid to pit him against his family, and make him trust her over everyone else. Agatha gifted him a cloak fashioned from shimmering iridescent feathers. Iri lived with her for a number of years before he came to the sudden realization that his feathers, which were beginning to turn blue, looked strikingly similar to his cloak. With this realization came the understanding that Agatha had killed and skinned his mother, and he was wearing her as a cloak. He later found his father's pocket watch in the forbidden part of the house, along with rows of aarakocra skulls.Iri fled, and befriended a drow named Adarr Shadowing, whom he traveled with for 4 years. But Iri was soon to be of-age for the hagspawn ritual, and Agatha wanted him back. Thus, she pulled strings to make a cursed lute fall into Adarr's posession, which slowly drove Adarr insane. Iri eventually ended up killing Adarr.Sensing an opportunity to fully control someone Iri loved, Agatha revived Adarr and erased many of his memories. After keeping him imprisoned for a number of months, she sent him out on a search for Iri.

Zakria is extremely practical and logical but loves to crack a stupid joke now and then with a dead serious face. Her voice is deep and gravelly and she rarely speaks…unless she’s fervently worshipping Asmodeus or damning someone she dislikes to hell.She loves cold hard cash, competition, and alcohol. Plus, she is highly suspicious and superstitious. Coming from the First Layer of Hell and the land of lawful evil, Zakria barely knows Faerun’s laws and customs, so her behaviour comes off as rather rude and off putting most of the time.Despite her cold demeanor, Zakria is fiercely loyal and truly cares about her friends. Moreover, although she’ll never admit it, she has feelings for Onyx the cat boy. As a cleric of Asmodeus, she’s sworn to forsake worldly pleasures and devote her heart and soul entirely to her god, but clearly, Zakria is failing miserably.

Zakria was born in Avernus, First Layer of Hell, where the sky is always a blood red and everything is really shitty. Also there’s an unending war called the Blood War happening there. Chaotic Evil soldiers and beasts from the Abyss come through the River Styx to fight against Lawful Evil forces in Avernus. Zakria is on the Lawful Evil side. After being orphaned like thousands of others, she found her home in the temples, where she slaved to fight for Asmodeus’ army. Despite all this, Zakria likes it there and calls it her home. It is all she’s ever known.After undergoing the Ritual of Higher Vision to blind herself in devotion to Asmodeus, Zakria was sent on a quest in Faerun to retrieve the Abyssal Pearl, a powerful artifact that could shift the tides of the Blood War. Despite stumbling through a new world, Zakria formed a reliable party and grew close to her new found friends.Not everyone approves of her religion, but that’s fine; Zakria tolerates them. After all, when Asmodeus wins and conquers the world, she will be by his side and live in his glorious infernal kingdom. Little did she know she would forsake her god while fighting Iri's mother. During the battle, Onyx was killed, and in desperation, Zakria prayed to Rihanna, the Goddess of Life and the enemy of Asmodeus, to save him. After the battle, Zakria was faced to confront her feelings and concluded this was a grievous mistake. She begged her god for forgiveness and was granted mercy to continue her quest.Unfortunately, her goal was cut short when Reva Espinoza, a true vampire, struck her down in battle. The party gave her a proper burial to ensure her soul would be sent to the Nine Hells rather than left to wander the Fugue Plane. They now plan to rescue her from the afterlife with Eloise Fontaine's help, believing Zakria is still a redeemable soul.

After Attila was moved up to a higher grade, Sheldon was consistently ranked at the top of his class, along with Atlas.Sheldon's life took a turn for the worse when he failed The Final Examination, a test given to all 16th years to both allow them to graduate, and to slot students into different graduate schools. Sheldon failed the test so profoundly that he did not graduate from Candlekeep Academy, and was not admitted to any graduate schools.
